This book — The Instant Millionaire by Mark Fisher — was a more unusual read for me, but it really impacted me so I wanted to feature it on Sidepreneurial. I read every day and I don’t talk about every book on this blog — I only write about the ones that I feel I’ve learned from and can pass along lessons to you that I think are worth the time you spend reading my content. This book is a very quick read and I recommend you read it…my wife even read it and liked it and we never read the same books!
Fable and Spiritual
What’s different about this book for me is, first, it’s a fable. The lessons of the book are told in story format…and I’ve realized I really like consuming content in this style! Secondly, it’s a bit more spiritual than the books I typically read. Not that I’m against spiritual at all…I just tend to read more traditional business books.
The Story
The story is about a boy that’s in a financial and career rut and goes to speak to his wealthy uncle for advice. The uncle refers him to an older man that’s extremely successful, a man that had mentored the uncle in the past. So basically the rest of the story unfolds with this mentor teaching the boy lessons about money, success and living a fulfilled life.
Lessons Learned
Here are the nuggets of wisdom I learned from this book that I want to pass onto you…
Think bigger: small thinking leads to small results. If your goal is to make $1,000 per month with your side business, why not plan for $5,000?
Have goals and remind yourself of these goals: you need to have goals in place so you know where you want to go and then remind yourself of these goals every day. I use https://www.memotome.com for this – it’s free.
Get a mentor or mastermind: I see the value in this, and while I have dabbled in some masterminds, I have a hard time keeping the commitment. You’re basically learning from others…and they says 2 heads are better than 1.
Use affirmations: see below!
Be confident in yourself: I wrote about this here. And it goes back to thinking bigger and believing in yourself. Some self-doubt is normal, but really focus on strengthening your mindset.
Think positive: like with having a strong mindset and being confident, negative thinking is pollution for your brain. That’s partly why I like to read books every day…besides gaining new knowledge, I look at it as positive nourishment for my mind.
Affirmations
I want to conclude this blog post by going into more details about affirmations. I know, I get it…some of you might think affirmations — which are basically statements you repeat to yourself every day — are strange. But whatever your definition of success is with your side business, I can’t stress enough the importance of having a strong and solid mindset. And affirmations helps with this…it’s like weight training for your brain.
One of the affirmations that The Instant Millionaire recommends is:
“Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.”
It’s an adaptation of the famous affirmation by Émile Coué.
I say this to myself every day…it’s in my daily goals email that I receive from Memo to Me…and I even have my kids saying it!
The reason I love this affirmation so much is because it’s so simple, but also so powerful. I believe that the path to success for most of us is steady, daily improvements that compound over time.
And this is pretty much what this affirmation is reminding you of.
